The Importance of Attendance at Union Hill

Attendance Sticker

We know that regular school attendance is foundational to student success, each day of school is an opportunity for students to learn, grow, and build the skills necessary for lifelong success. When a student is absent, they miss out on valuable instruction, peer interactions, and the consistent reinforcement of habits that will serve them well throughout their educational journey and beyond.

Building Lifelong Skills

At Union Hill, we are committed to fostering a learning environment where every student can thrive. Our approach goes beyond academics to include the development of essential life skills. Regular attendance helps students develop:

  1. Responsibility and Time Management: By attending school daily, students learn the importance of punctuality and meeting commitments.
  2. Social Skills: Regular interaction with peers and teachers helps students develop effective communication, teamwork, and conflict-resolution skills.
  3. Academic Proficiency: Consistent attendance ensures that students are continuously engaged with the curriculum, building a strong foundation for future learning.

The Bearcat Community

Being a part of the Bearcat Community means recognizing the interconnectedness of academic achievement and personal well-being. Studies have shown that children who are chronically absent in kindergarten and first grade are far less likely to read proficiently by the end of first grade. This early proficiency is crucial for future academic success. At Union Hill, we aim to intervene early and ensure that all students have the support they need to attend school regularly and succeed.

By promoting regular attendance and addressing the underlying causes of absenteeism, we can help every student reach their full potential. We are committed to working together with parents, guardians, and the community to ensure that our students are present, engaged, and ready to learn every day.

At Union Hill, we are more than just a school; we are a community that cares deeply about the success and well-being of every student. Together, we can build a brighter future for all of our Bearcats.

Union Hill Attendance Policy
Union Hill School District receives money from the state based on daily student attendance. When a student is absent, whether it is excused or unexcused, the district loses its apportionment (money) for that day. Children missing school is undesirable both from an educational and a financial point of view.

Absences
On the day the student is absent, the teacher will place the absent student’s work in the student’s/classroom absent work folder, or make work available electronically through Google Classroom or other online access. Upon returning from an excused or unexcused absence, the student will have the same number of days he/she was absent to complete the work. If the student fails to turn in the make-up work within the allocated days, he/she may still turn in the work, but it will be subject to the teacher’s late work policy. Absences due to illness are considered excused. Please do not send your student to school if not feeling well and especially if they have a temperature above 100*F, diarrhea, or are vomiting. To report absences or tardies, please call the attendance line at 530-273-8456 x250. Unverified absences will be marked unexcused after three school days. Independent Study: A two week's notice is required for students who will be absent from school for more than five consecutive days for reasons other than illness. Please contact the school office to set up an Independent Study contract to help maintain continuity in your child’s studies. All assignments are due upon your child’s return.

Tardies
Students who are tardy to school are asked to report to the main office where an admit slip will be issued.

In order for the tardiness to be excused, please provide a note from the appointment for verification. Students needing to leave school early are asked to bring a note from the parent or guardian stating the reason and the time he/she is leaving and given to the teacher at the beginning of the day. Students will be called from the classroom once the parent/guardian has signed him/her out. Parents must come to the school office to sign students out of school early. School Attendance Review Board (SARB): The school is required by law to report student truancy to the SARB Board. The California State Education Code Section 48260 considers a student to be truant from school when that student has accrued three unexcused absences, excused absences in excess of 10% of the school days, or three or more tardies. Students who are not in compliance with the state’s attendance requirements will receive notices from the school in an effort to correct the problem. Continued noncompliance will result in a referral to the SARB Board.
