School History

Union Hill School has a "Tradition of Excellence" that goes back to 1868 when it began as a one-room schoolhouse serving children of the Union Hill mining community. We have grown over the past 150-plus years to become the largest TK-8 school in Western Nevada County.

Enrollment is around 700 students with a dedicated teaching staff of 40 classroom teachers and specialists, and a committed support staff serves the many needs of our Bearcat students and families.

Union Hill School prides itself on developing our students' knowledge and character during the many continuous years a student is part of the Bearcat Family.  Many a student's journey at Union Hill begins in the Bearcat Discovery Center preschool and eleven years later they are promoted to high school well-equipped with the knowledge, character, and maturity to be successful in higher levels of education.

We also have a significant number of families that choose to transfer to Union Hill because they desire a rigorous curriculum provided to our students in a positive and supportive learning environment.

The core subject lessons in English, social studies, math, and science are delivered focused on first-best instruction with an emphasis on reducing barriers to student learning. Sports, music, art, drama, technology, foreign language, public speaking, debate, and community service are some of the opportunities provided for our students through the core program and enrichment opportunities.

Parent and community involvement at Union Hill School is a strength of our school community. We welcome volunteers, presenters, and community service organizations. Our Union Hill Parent Teacher Club is second to none in the support it provides to our students and families.

Once a Bearcat, Always a Bearcat!
